Dizziness

IMG_0957On the weekend I was asked by a family member if a physiotherapist could treat ‘dizziness’. The answer is both yes and no! There are many different types of dizziness, some which are manageable with physiotherapy. A common complaint we hear about is dizziness when moving from a standing position to lying down or when simply turning in bed. This may be caused by an inner ear issue and is commonly called ‘vertigo’. There are however a whole heap of conditions/ medications that can cause dizziness so its important to first have these ruled out.

Your physiotherapist can perform a few simple tests to decide whether it is a form of vertigo they can treat. A commonly treatable type of vertigo is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (or positional vertigo for short!). If you test positive for this, your physio can teach you a repositioning manoeuvre that will allow relocation of the inner ear particles and thus stop the dizziness. The good news is that it has a 90-95% success rate! So suffer no more with your dizziness – come in and see us at Inspired Physiotherapy.
